With the industrialization of the Ruhr area and the associated population growth, the Emscher was increasingly used for the discharge of wastewater. Large parts of the riverbed were fortified, and its course was straightened. To turn the Emscher from an open sewer back into an almost natural river, the Emschergenossenschaft plans to separate clean and dirty water as well as polluted rainwater runoff by constructing wastewater sewers.
For this construction project RWB Lot 1A in Oberhausen, rainwater treatment plants and sewers from km 13.5 to km 15.3 are to be built in line with the Emscher remodelling project in the rainwater treatment plant, the dirty wastewater is separated from the clean rainwater and then discharged through the wastewater sewer into a wastewater treatment plant. The clean rainwater, on the other hand, reaches the watercourse via an spill overflow after reaching a certain height.
